Importance of the Individual

Friendships are becoming increasingly surface level, even more so is a connection with oneself.

Social media has made it so we project our identities onto groups, losing individuality. This can be observed through our attachment to certain causes, certain social dynamics, and certain political/ideological movements.

These are easy attachments to observe, but some attachments aren’t easy to observe like our attachment to our parent’s, our friend group’s or our study institution’s ideals. These attachments result in other people’s ideas, dictating our lives.

So, how can we detach these attachments? It all comes back to thinking for ourselves. Consider what do you actually think, how do things genuinely impact you? Remove everyone else from the equation, be “selfish”, and think just about you. The more you do this the more of an individual you become. Individuals are the people who are polarising, who are interesting, who believe in themselves.

Just think about your favourite people, whether that be friends, mentors, celebrities, etc. There is generally something about them that makes you love them. And think about the people you hate, once again there’s something about them that makes you burn at the thought of them.

You know who you can’t think of? All the people who fly under the radar because they lack any individuality. Feel free to be this person, but community and opportunity comes to those who put out.
